The animals on this page are animals who were either rescued from horrible situations or were found by good samaritans and require serious medical attention. Our plea is for help to provide the best medical attention that these animals deserve. The costs for many of the procedures are very expensive and without the help of compassionate people we would not be able to provide care to these special angels and others like them.

Emma - I was hit by a car and had broken back legs. My former owner refused to treat me and asked the veterinarian to put me to sleep. The vet refused and asked if I could be put into APAWS. APAWS took me in and had surgery done to fix my legs. I had to have pins and wires in my legs, which cost APAWS about $1,200 dollars. I still have some nerve damage, but we are hoping that I won't have to have surgery again. I am now in a foster home where I am healing.

Sully is a very sweet girl who was found lying in a ditch. Her rear paw was partially cut off and bone exposed, and her front paw has been totally crushed. Her rear paw will have to be amputated, and possibly her front paw as well. The procedure will be quite expensive, but we feel that this little girl deserves the chance to live.

UPDATE: Sully has had her rear leg amputated, but fortunately her front paw has healed. It is slightly deformed, but she is able to walk very well. As you can see from her photo she is quite playful, and we are inspired by her spirit and determination to be just like all the other cats.

Updates on Our Angels

Sadie is a very sweet girl who had a rough start to life. She was bought as a puppy from a breeder by a man who wanted to make her a hunting dog. Sadie did not want to hunt, and tried to make her hunt by beating her. She has escaped this horrible situation, but not without a lot of emotional scars. Sadie is extremely afraid of men; therefore, she needs to be in a home where it will just be her and a female family. She is a very sad dog who needs someone to show her that life can be wonderful, and she can have a home where she will be pampered and loved.

UPDATE: Sadie has found her loving forever home, where she is learning how good people can be and that life is not so bad after all.

Millie is a wonderful young cat who loves attention and is a total sweetheart. She unfortunately has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. She needs to be either an only cat, or in a home with another FeLV+ cat. We want to work with her to try to build up her immune system in an attempt to kill off the virus. Right now our organization is overloaded with cats and kittens due to a overwhelming kitten season and have no foster to take her in. Wouldn’t you give this sweet girl a chance to live?

UPDATE: Millie is currently being fostered to be adopted by a wonderful family who saw what a wonderful girl she is and wanted to give her the best life possible. She is healthy and happy with her new family, who believes that she has the spirit and determination to live just as long as any other kitty.

Cassidy was rescued from Animal Control. She is a sweet girl who has a deformed rear leg. Apparently she injured her leg in an accident some time in the past and her former owner never brought her to a veterinarian to help her. She just recently started physical therapy in the hope of regaining full use of her leg. At this point, her outlook is still uncertain, but we hope to continue her medical care to give her the best chance possible.

UPDATE: Unfortunately Cassidy's physical therapy was not able to improve the use of her leg. Cassidy has been adopted by a veterinarian who fell in love with her and will continue to work with her to give her a wonderful life.

Sarah was found by one of our volunteers who cares for a feral colony. When the volunteer went to feed the colony she heard a pitiful cry coming from some trash cans. She looked around trying to find the cat that was in distress and after looking around the cans was shocked to discover that someone had thrown an injured kitten inside the trash. When she went to the can and looked down there was a pair of pitiful eyes staring back at her. The kitten could not stand; therefore it was unable to get out of the trash can. The volunteer took the kitten to the veterinarian where it was discovered that Sarah had a broken front leg and nerve damage, which was why she could not stand. It was also discovered that the traumatic injury must have occurred a couple of weeks before because the break was already healing and her muscles had atrophied. Fortunately, Sarah was found and rescued from a situation that some inhumane person put her into. Now she must go through physical rehabilitation to restore strength to her leg and hopefully help the nerve damage heal so she will be able to walk on her front leg again.

UPDATE: Sarah is now walking on her leg and has just started to play again. She is in the home of a loving foster who will be working with her to overcome the trauma she has been through. Apparently, her physical wounds are healing, but her emotional wounds will take a little more time.

Toby was a stray cat who was found by one of our volunteers. Toby was apparently hit by a car and has a fractured rear leg. He is currently in a splint and the veterinarian has told us that he must come back in 4 weeks to see how it has healed, and may possibly have to stay in it for 8 weeks. They believe that his leg will heal back, but he may not have full use of his leg later on. He is a very sweet boy who loves attention. He is in need of a loving, pampering foster or forever, inside home that can give him all the cuddles and love he deserves.

UPDATE: Toby is fully recovered and very active. He is the sweetest boy and would love to find a home hopefully with one of his siblings that were rescued from shortly after he was taken in for medical treatment.

Roscoe was rescued from a shelter before he was to be put to sleep. He is high heartworm positive and needs heartworm treatment.

UPDATE: Roscoe completed his heartworm treatment and is heartworm free. Roscoe has been adopted into a home where he is getting all of the love and attention he deserves.

Doyle was found in a warehouse and brought in to a local veterinarian. It was discovered that he could not defecate on his own. After several attempts to relieve his condition, it was decided to put him to sleep. APAWS took Doyle in and continued to search for a cause to his condition. His current veterinarian found that Doyle suffers from megacolon. Megacolon is a disorder where the nerves in the colon do not function properly, and the colon does not contract as it should. The colon enlarges and waste cannot be moved out of the body. This can result in an impaction, which can become toxic and result in the death of the animal if untreated.

UPDATE: Doyle underwent surgery to remove most of his colon. He has been doing well, although he will have to be monitored closely for the rest of his life to make sure complications do not arise. Doyle has been adopted by a compassionate man, who in the near future will become a veterinarian. Now Doyle has a loving home, with a guardian who understands his condition and will give him the chance to live a long happy life.

Scooter is a long haired Chihuahua mix that was found by one of our volunteers sitting on the side of the interstate holding his leg up. When she stopped the car he hobbled over as if to say, "I didn't think anyone was going to stop and help me", jumped up in her arms. He was immediately brought to the vet, x-rayed and found that his femur bone was broken in two places just above the elbow. He has had extensive surgery for two pins and a plate. None has held, and now the veterinarian suggests amputation of his leg.

UPDATE: Scooter did have his leg amputated, but has adapted quite well to having only three legs. Since his surgery he has been adopted into a wonderful, loving home.
